SEVENTH ANNUAL UTAH STEM EXPO TO BE HELD FEB. 29, 2020

AT MOUNTAIN AMERICA EXPO CENTER

Event is free and open to the public

Sandy, Utah— Students from Utah middle schools, high schools and colleges/universities will be showcasing their STEM (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects at the Seventh Annual Utah STEM and Charter School Expo to be held Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020 at the Mountain America Center (formerly known as South Towne Expo) in Sandy (9575 S. State St.).  The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The Utah STEM and Charter School Expo is hosted and organized by Beehive Science & Technology Academy charter school.  Beehive Science & Technology, located in Sandy, currently serves students in grades 6 through 12.  Beginning in the 2020/2021, Beehive will expand its offerings to include kindergarten through grade 5.

According to Beehive Principal Hanifi Oguz, last year’s event included displays from approximately 350 students from some 20 Utah schools.  Students can apply to have a display by sending an email to principal@beehiveacademy.org.  Oguz estimated that 4,500 people attended last year’s expo.

Beehive STEM Coordinator/Department Chair Kerrie Upenieks added, “The expo provides a venue for students from across the state to showcase their STEM projects.  What’s more, it allows companies and institutions with the opportunity to show how STEM is used to improve our communities.  Finally, those who attend can participate in hands-on experiments.  In addition to LEGO robotics, robotics presentations, science shows, science trivia and activities, there will be chances to win donated prizes.  The goal of the expo is to connect our schools to the community, students to professionals, and generate interest and excitement for STEM in general.”
