BEEHIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY’S KERRIE UPENIEKS RECEIVES

A SOCIETY FOR SCIENCE AND THE PUBLIC STEM RESEARCH GRANT

Sandy—Beehive Science and Technology Academy’s science teacher and department head, Kerrie Upenieks, has received a $2,000 STEM research grant from the Society for Science and Public.  The grant is being used to purchase a miniPCR lab starter kit for Beehive’s Biology, AP Biology, Biotech CTE course and Science Fair program.

According to Ms. Upenieks, “The materials the kit gives us will allow our students to the use the same tools that are used in actual research laboratories.  These tools include: two thermal cyclers, which allow us to make copies of specific pieces of DNA, using a process similar to what our cells use; four electrophoresis systems, machines which allow us to visualize the DNA and measure it relative to a control; microcentrifuge, a machine used to spin samples quickly, which can be used to separate different chemicals or parts of a cell; seven micropipettes, tools which allow us to move very specific (and small) amounts of sample—this is important for being able to do procedures accurately; and six micropipette tip racks, which are used with the micropipettes—you can’t use a micropipette without tips.”
