Sandy—Beehive Science and Technology Academy 6th/7th grade math teacher, Megan Theorine, has been named teacher of the year by Sandy City.  Ms. Theorine was presented with the award on Feb. 12 at a special awards ceremony held at Hale Centre Theatre.

     According to Sandy City, this award is given “For any teacher in a public or private school in the Sandy area.  We want to honor a teacher who uplifts and encourages students of all ages to go for their dreams and encourages their love to learn.”

          Sandy City officials have said the annual awards are “For individuals who have shown distinction in service to members in our community.”  The nine categories are:  Outstanding Citizen Contribution, Long-Term Citizen Contribution, Outstanding Service Award, Special Recognition Award, Coach of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Volunteer of the Year, Citizen of Merit and Open Category.  Applications for the award are submitted from the general public.  The awards are selected by Sandy City Council members and Sandy administration.

     Ms. Theorine has taught 6th/7th grade math at Beehive Science and Technology Academy charter school since 2013. In addition, she has served on the School Transformation Team, and helped lead the school in professional development activities. She developed curriculum and piloted new technology programs to improve student learning. She also volunteered in Beehive’s College Mentorship and Leadership Program to help students improve ACT scores, apply for scholarships/colleges, and earn Congressional Medals.
