Beehive teacher to be honored June 12 at awards gala

Sandy, Utah—Beehive Science and Technology Academy’s Science Teacher/STEM Coordinator/Department Head Kerrie Upenieks has won a Best of State 2020 award in the education category under teacher.

There were 38 categories under education for this year’s competition (the competition has been held since 2010).

Upenieks will be presented with a Best of State medal at the Best of State Awards Gala to be held on the evening of June 12 at the Salt Palace Convention Center Grand Ballroom.

Upenieks has been teaching since 2004.  She joined Beehive in 2018. She is currently Beehive’s 8th and 11th grade science teacher and STEM coordinator and department head for the Science Department.  She also oversees the Utah STEM Expo.

In the Best of State nomination form, Beehive School Counselor Lexie Hemeyer wrote, “Kerrie Upenieks is that teacher that every school dreams about.  The one that goes above and beyond and gives 110 percent to everything she does.  She is the one who views the entire school as a community and would do anything to help others in need.  She is enthusiastic about education and passionate about STEM, which she easily transfers to those around her.  She is kind and genuine while also being firm and direct.  She is not only an amazing teacher but also an incredible human.”
